Dawn Chorus and Evening Walk on Parkwood Springs

General 2015Posted by Neill Tue, May 05, 2015 15:55:27
Hi everybody. One of the hats that I wear is Chair of the Friends of Parkwood Springs, which, for people who don't know it, is a vast area of countryside on the hillside overlooking the River Don, going north from the city centre. A very small part of it is the old Ski Village site.

Our long-term objective is for it to become our 'country park in the city', but already there are amazing views over the city to the moors, and remarkable urban countryside. As part of Sheffield Environment Weeks we are having two walks, and everybody is welcome.

The first is a Dawn Chorus walk to hear the bird song as dawn breaks over the city. This is at 5am (yes, 5am!) on Sunday 10th May, meeting at the car park on Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road, S3 9AA. It will be led jointly by John and Anne Robinson from Sheffield RSPB providing the bird expertise, and me. There will be bacon butties and veggie sausage baps, and plenty of tea and coffee, at our house at the end of the walk (donations welcome to the RSPB and the Friends Group).

The second is an evening walk, exploring Parkwood Springs, Roe Woods and Crabtree Ponds (a Sheffield Wildlife Trust nature reserve) . This will cover the views, some of the surprising countryside close to the city centre, and a little bit of the history. It will be 3-4 miles, led by me.

There are two meeting places for this walk. For anyone coming by bus, we will meet at 6.30pm at Pitsmoor Post Office Pitsmoor Road, S3 9AU. This is served by loads of buses - 47, 48, 75, 76, 83, 83A, 87, 88, 97, 98, 265, 29.

For people coming by car, we will then meet at 6.40pm at the car park on Cooks Wood Road/Shirecliffe Road, S3 9AA.

We will return to the starting points no later than 9pm.

It would be useful if you could let me know if you are planning to come, particularly for the Dawn Chorus walk - neill.schofield@googlemail.com or 0777 156 4883. But if you decide to come at the last minute, just turn up - you'll be very welcome.

Neill Schofield
