Three things I have learned today;
1. Never go walking without full waterproofs even if its in Tenerife.
2. Just because they are given as delightful samples of different delicacies made with local ingredients, if you eat too many you will still feel sick.
3. Umbrellas bought at Poundshop are not actually worth a pound.
Seriously though Canarians have put enormous effort into this 2nd annual walking festival. They want to promote the Canaries as a hiking destination and attract a different kind of tourist.
I registered and chose my walks before leaving home. We were given a civic reception and lots of freebies. The walks are well organised and you can choose between coastal, forest and mountain. We were accompanied by local guides, linguists, national park people, tourist office reps and the European President of the Ramblers. I have met people from Hungary, Canada ,Netherlands, Holland and, Denmark.
Next year's festival is in May. Check it out. I paid less than a Contours Walking holiday in the UK for travel, transfers, half board hotel and walking fees. A great experience.

The roughly-equivalent organisation to the Ramblers in the western part of Germany is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2016. (Yes, 125 years!) They are having two days of celebrations in Bochum on the 3rd and 4th June, and have contacted us to ask if any of our members would be interested in taking part.
I am, and I think it would be good if Sheffield walkers could be represented, as Bochum's twin town. It could be an interesting visit.
We have asked for more details of what would be involved. They have suggested a 3-4 day visit, around the dates above, but at the moment we don't know more than that.
However, if you might be interested, or know anyone who might, please let me know.

If you are bringing cars tomorrow for the walk please park at the back of the car park.
As you will no doubt realize with all this rain today the walk will be muddy in places - hope we're not all too 'clarted up' for the dinner!
As some of you know they don't normally do Christmas dinners on a Sunday - someone should not really have booked us in. I did query it when I got the menu and was told it'd be fine then I got a phone call from the landlady the day before I went away! However, she's fine about us going but just worried that they won't have time between the last carvery customers going and us arriving to move tables around and set then all out properly for a Christmas meal. There will just be main course cutlery and crackers on the tables - the rest as we need it - and we will be on small tables rather than long ones. I said I was sure we could cope with that!
Please pay for your meal as you arrive (remember you've all paid £5 deposit) and buy your first drink and make sure your name is crossed off their list.
The list is in alphabetical order of christian names but couples are together under the name of the first one alphabetically.
Should be slightly better weather tomorrow - I hope!

Thank you to all of those,especially Barry, who helped me today. I guess you could say everything came to a head - unfortunately mine. The funny thing is I did go to Specsavers last Thursday but they said I didn't need any new glasses. I hope you all had a good walk. I am sorry if I spoilt it for anyone.
